America’s Dementia Care Crisis: Gerontologist Publishes Practical Guide for Families
February 27, 2026
— As the U.S. population ages, caregiving responsibilities are increasing for families, often creating emotional, financial and physical strain. In response, gerontologist Dr. Macie P. Smith has published The Complete Dementia Caregiver’s Guide: Expert Strategies for Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care, a resource focused on the practical and emotional aspects of dementia care.
“Caregiving is one of the most challenging yet rewarding responsibilities you can undertake,” Smith said. “And caring for someone with dementia requires knowledge, patience and tremendous strength.”
Smith, a gerontologist and former caregiver for her grandmother, draws on professional and personal experience to address dementia-related topics including disease progression, nutritional and eating challenges, distinctions between medical and nonmedical care and options for family members who may qualify for compensation as caregivers. She also addresses caregiver burnout, boundaries, guilt and grief.
At just over 120 pages, the book is available in print and Audible formats. It is written for a general audience and emphasizes practical strategies for families managing care from early diagnosis through late-stage dementia.
Smith said she aims to reframe caregiving as skilled labor that requires training and support.
“Most importantly, this book will help readers understand that caregiving is a legitimate profession that deserves recognition, compensation and proper training,” Smith said.
