Humboldt Commons Receives Approval to Accept 10% Reservation Deposits

McKINLEYVILLE, Calif. — Humboldt Commons, a nonprofit senior living community planned for Humboldt County, has received approval from the California Department of Social Services to begin accepting 10% reservation deposits from prospective residents.
The repayable deposits allow prospective residents to reserve homes at the community, which is scheduled to begin construction in 2027 and welcome residents in 2029.
Plans call for 109 cottages and apartments for adults 62 and older, along with shared community spaces. The project is being developed by Life Plan Humboldt, the local nonprofit board that founded Humboldt Commons, in partnership with The Kendal Corporation. Humboldt Commons is a Kendal Affiliate in Development.
The project grew out of a grassroots effort started about seven years ago by local residents who wanted to remain in the Humboldt County area as they aged.
“We are building a community where residents age with independence, social connections and purpose, all in the community they have grown to love,” said Ann Lindsay, president of Life Plan Humboldt.
Humboldt Commons launched its Future Residents Priority List in late January and has since received more than 250 priority deposits, according to the organization.
Design work is continuing with The Kendal Corporation, Life Plan Humboldt’s design committee, architect LSW Design and Pacific Builders. Life Plan Humboldt board member JoAnn Schuch said the response to the preliminary designs could help the organization reach the conversion rate needed for construction bond financing.
Plans include a central dining area, fitness center, walking paths, outdoor gathering areas and residences ranging from apartments to cottages.
The community plans to provide around-the-clock staff availability and a full-time care coordinator with the goal of supporting residents in independent living for as long as possible. Humboldt Commons also plans to maintain a memorandum of understanding with nearby Timber Ridge Assisted Living and Memory Care for temporary stays. Higher levels of on-site care could be added in later phases.
The Kendal Corporation is a nonprofit organization supporting communities and services for older adults. Its affiliates operate Life Plan Communities and other senior living and care services in several states.
