CALA Honors Brightwater of Highland’s Nelson and Sanchez
November 20, 2024
SACRAMENTO, CA — The California Assisted Living Association has recognized a pair of Brightwater Senior Living employees according to a press release. Amber Nelson, health services director, and Angela Sanchez, lead housekeeper, both of Brightwater of Highland, have been honored with Outstanding Community Nurse Award and the Outstanding Team Member Award, respectively.
Nelson started at Brightwater as a caregiver, and she has risen through the ranks, from medication technician to charge nurse, and ultimately to health services director. She mentors new team members while balancing the challenges of working the night shift and attending nursing school. Nelson also organized study groups with her peers at the community, ensuring that she and her colleagues supported each other in their educational pursuits.
Her compassionate approach to caregiving led one anxious and reluctant resident to tell her family, “I’ll stay as long as Amber is here.” Her colleagues often praise her for her ability to listen first and solve problems with empathy, ensuring that every individual feels heard and valued.
“Amber Nelson exemplifies what it means to lead with both heart and skill,” said CALA President/CEO Sally Michael. “Her nurturing spirit, combined with her exceptional dedication to resident care, makes her an extraordinary leader. CALA is proud to honor her contributions to the Assisted Living profession.”

Sanchez, a cancer survivor, approaches each day with a contagious positivity, often saying, “I woke up today, so it’s a good day.” This outlook, coupled with her tireless work ethic, has endeared her to residents, peers and leadership alike. One resident, bedridden due to Parkinson’s disease, found comfort in Sanchez’s daily visits, where their conversations brought him joy and mental stimulation. Even after the resident has transitioned to skilled nursing care, Sanchez continues to speak with him daily.
The lead housekeeper was specifically created for Sanchez.
“Angela Sanchez’s selflessness and commitment to others are nothing short of inspiring,” CALA’s Michael said. “Her impact extends far beyond her job description — she is a friend, a mentor, and a shining example of positivity to everyone she encounters. We are honored to recognize her incredible contributions with this award.”
With approximately 660 provider members and 160 associate members, CALA is the only association solely representing California’s residential care facilities for the elderly, which encompass assisted living, memory care and continuing care retirement communities.
