Construction Complete on Large Senior Living Expansion in Jenison

November 22, 2022

HOLLAND, MI—EV Construction and The Christman Company, two leading west Michigan construction management firms, partnered with Sunset Senior Communities and Hobbs+Black Architects on the third phase of the Waterford Place community.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to serve even more seniors in the west Michigan area with the opening of Waterford Place’s [The] Glens South!” said Ben Leavell, executive director of Waterford Place. “Our current residents are excited about the expanding community with all the new amenities, such as the 150-seat chapel, marketplace, state-of-the-art fitness center and bistro. Our incoming residents are excited to move into an already established community that is full of faith, love and those with a heart to serve. I would also like to mention [that] working side by side with the professionals at The Christman Company and EV Construction has been a great experience. They not only care about ensuring they build a top-quality community, but they also care about the people who are going to be living and working in the community they construct. We are beyond thrilled for this new chapter of Waterford Place and the impact it will have on our community.”

Waterford Place, located at 1725 Port Sheldon St. in Jenison, offers a variety of floor plan options to residents. The Glens South, constructed by the Christman Company and EV Construction joint venture, consists of a new, four-story building with 62 independent living apartments, as well as main floor amenities including a bistro, lounge, market, chapel and fitness center. Additionally, a new level of parking was constructed over an existing parking garage. In tandem with The Glens South, The Cove—a neighborhood of 20 villas that sit lakeside—was also completed, offering a more private independent living setup for those who desire it.

“There simply aren’t enough communities to house the rising number of seniors who need them. And just like any other business, when demand outpaces supply, prices skyrocket, which has left millions of American families making tough choices about caring for their elder loved ones. Our seniors deserve better than an uncertain future, and the problem is only expected to get worse as the baby boomer generation continues to age. Researchers say the number of people 85+ will triple by 2060,” said Paul Griffin III, CEO of Griffin Living, in an article on Forbes.com regarding senior housing options. “The need for quality senior living communities has never been greater, and the need will only continue to grow. The construction of senior neighborhoods like Waterford Place is vital for our community.”

Sunset Senior Communities is one of the largest Christian-based nonprofit organizations in west Michigan. As part of this most recent phase, it was important to Sunset that a chapel be part of the construction, offering a sanctuary for their residents to worship with a community of believers.

Construction of The Glens South completes more than a decade of work for the joint venture of The Christman Company and EV Construction. In total, the joint venture and Sunset Senior Communities have developed over 370,000 square feet of space for Waterford Place. The community has over 160 independent living homes, 24 assisted living homes and 40 memory care homes, as well as unique dining venues, a chapel, pool and spa, woodworking shop, library and parking garage.
