Harmony Senior Services Owner Donates $100K, Household Items for Storm Relief
October 31, 2024
ASHEVILLE, NC — Following Hurricane Helene, the owner of Harmony at Reynolds Mountain in this city that was decimated by the storm, has responded with a $100,000 donation to five organizations engaged in immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts. Contribution checks were presented to the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, The United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, Asheville Buncombe Institute for Parity Achievement, Baptists on Mission, and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance — arming each with vital funds to provide resources and aid to their various frontline emergency and disaster initiatives.
Furthermore, more than 100 pieces of furniture and household items, valued at more than $50,000, were donated to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship to assist citizens in the Asheville area with rebuilding of their homes.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to offer support and financial assistance to those who provide direct services to aid our neighbors in Asheville affected by the recent storm,” said Harmony Senior Services owner James R. Smith in a press release. “We realize the need is overwhelming and funds are stretched thin. For this reason, our organization is dedicated to support critical needs of people, families, and communities where it’s needed most.”
The Resident Council at Harmony at Reynold’s Mountain selected the recipients for the donations made by the Smith Family Charitable Foundation, which is a private institution led and chaired by Smith.
Additionally, Harmony Senior Services CEO Ken Segarnick and other members of leadership were onsite to assist with the devastation by initiating an emergency trailer to provide water supply and ground support to ensure residents’ safety, wellbeing, and comfort during the stressful event.
“The Smiths’ significant donation to these on-the-ground organizations will make an immediate impact and also help with the long-time recovery to come,” said Marylyn Huff, Harmony at Reynolds Mountain Resident Council chair and resident. “We are truly grateful Harmony Senior Services has lived out its principle of ‘Family Serving Families.’ Outstanding leadership on every level has resulted in our being better cared for than any senior resident facility in WNC.”
Located in Asheville, Harmony at Reynolds Mountain offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care apartments.
Formed by Smith in 2000, the Smith Family Foundation is a private independent grantmaking institution dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals and families by supporting organizations that advance student scholarships, educational institutions, medical research, and social programs that provide our most vulnerable communities with financial and quality of life assistance.
The Smith Family Foundation previously contributed $2,000,000 in disaster relief gifts to more than 2,300 Harmony frontline associates during the pandemic in April 2020.
Harmony Senior Services is a management company founded by Smith and rooted in the belief that each resident, family member, and associate is treated with the same care, compassion, and respect as expected by the Smith family themselves. The company’s 45 senior living communities offer independent living, assisted living, and a comprehensive Signature Memory Care program.
