Sunrise Senior Living Named One of the Best Workplaces in the Bay Area® in 2019

March 6, 2019

MCLEAN, VA–Great Place to Work® and FORTUNE have recognized Sunrise Senior Living among the top 70 Best Workplaces in the Bay Area. Sunrise is the only senior living operator to make this year’s list, which is based on what employees think about more than 60 elements of their job experience, such as innovation, trust, and feeling pride in their work. Sunrise earned the No. 24 spot out of 35 in the Large Companies category, which includes well-known brands in technology, hospitality, retail, and consulting.

More than 30,000 employees at all levels of experience in northern California’s San Francisco Bay Area provided input on their respective organizations to develop this year’s Best Workplaces in the Bay Area list. An article in Fortune details Sunrise’s achievement and features the extent to which team members feel like their work has special meaning and how they are proud to tell others they work at Sunrise.

“We place great emphasis on helping to ensure that each member of our team knows that they are a valued part of our uniquely supportive community,” said Jeff Slichta, senior vice president of Operations for Sunrise, West Division. “Through comprehensive benefits, formalized training programs for career advancement, and other development opportunities, we strive to foster an environment that enables team members to learn and grow every day.”

Of Sunrise’s more than 32,000 team members in the U.S., Canada, and United Kingdom, approximately 1,500 serve residents in the greater San Francisco area.

“Sunrise has a dearly held saying that team members receive a ‘second paycheck.’ It’s about the satisfaction each of us receives knowing that we help make the world a better place for seniors and each other,” added Slichta.

Bay Area employees responded to more than 60 survey questions centered on how their organization creates a Great Place to Work For All™. Eighty-five percent of the evaluation was based on employees’ levels of trust in their organization and whether they feel they are reaching their full potential. The remaining 15 percent was based on an assessment of all employees’ daily experiences of innovation, the company’s values, and the effectiveness of their leaders.

In addition to this recognition, Sunrise achieved No. 7 on the national Best Workplaces for Aging Services list developed by Great Place to Work® and Fortune in 2018.

“I am extremely proud of our team members and their commitment to both providing high-quality, personalized care to our families and to our mission of championing quality of life for all seniors,” said Chris Winkle, chief executive officer for Sunrise. “We are dedicated to cultivating a professionally and personally rewarding work environment. Taking a top spot on the Best Workplaces in the Bay Area list shows the excellence in our team members and their high engagement.”

“Employers in the Bay Area face a competitive labor market as well as an incredible diversity of local and international talent attracted to its opportunities,” said Michael Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work. “Organizations like Sunrise Senior Living stand out from the crowd, intentionally growing their businesses by creating great places to work for all, driving their innovation and success through their people.”

To be considered for this list, companies had to meet the Great Place to Work-Certified standard, which includes completing a culture brief and surveying employees using Great Place to Work’s Trust Index©. At least 5 percent of the survey respondents in large companies and at least 20 percent of the survey respondents in small and medium companies needed to be from the Bay Area. Companies with 10 to 999 people were considered for the small and medium category; companies (including Sunrise) with 1,000 employees or more were considered for the large category.

As of February 1, 2019, Sunrise operated 326 communities in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, including 21 Gracewell Healthcare communities, with a total unit capacity of over 29,200. Sunrise offers a full range of personalized senior living services, including independent living, assisted living, care for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory loss, as well as nursing and rehabilitative services. In 2018, Sunrise became the first senior living company to be ranked “Highest in Customer Satisfaction among Senior Living Communities” by J.D. Power.
