Broadview Senior Learning Community at Purchase College, SUNY Celebrates Completion of Financing and Construction Start

November 19, 2021

Future residents of Broadview Senior Living at Purchase College, SUNY celebrated the financial closing for the unique new university-based retirement community that will soon be located on the idyllic Westchester campus of Purchase College. Charter members of the Broadview community gathered at The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College to celebrate this historic milestone with performances and remarks from special guests.

Financing for the project closed earlier this month, with $400 million in project bonds selling to investors in a matter of weeks. In May of 2019, Broadview Senior Living’s operator Life Care Services—the nation’s leading provider of high-quality senior lifestyle communities—announced the start of reservations and now the community is over 85% reserved.

The concept of Broadview Senior Living at Purchase College began taking shape in 2002, when a plan was developed for a senior living community on the college campus. This retirement community would not only serve the needs of a growing senior population in the greater Westchester County area, but also provide unique opportunities for intergenerational learning, creativity and mentoring. This plan is now moving forward. The initial phase will include 220 independent living apartments and villas for seniors ages 62 and older. In addition, enhanced assisted living apartments and memory care suites will be available on-site for residents as they age.

The design for Broadview includes a unique “Learning Commons,” a space where residents and students can learn from each other or simply exchange views over a cup of coffee. Classrooms, art studios, a performance space, maker space and a café are all included in this collaborative meeting and learning space. Residents who wish to participate will take specially designed classes and workshops and may also audit courses with students as space allows. Broadview residents will also attend theatrical and cultural events at The Performing Arts Center at Purchase College and The Neuberger Museum of Art for a modest cost.

“As this project gets closer to opening, we’re becoming more and more excited about having opportunities to engage in the kind of active, intergenerational learning that is at the heart of this community. We’re grateful for our future Broadview residents’ commitment to our students and staff. Broadview’s benefits to our campus are many. We hope that our future residents will find living among our creative, diverse, inspiring students equally as rewarding,” said Purchase College President Dr. Milagros Peña.

“I’m honored to be a part of this wonderful community and to have been part of Purchase College for more than 40 years,” said Lee Schlesinger, Broadview Charter Member and Purchase College Associate Professor Emeritus of Literature. “Purchase College is an extraordinary place and will continue to be an amazing place––and I cannot wait to continue my journey here.”

“This project has a rich and long history that exemplifies hard work, dedication, determination and collaboration. A heartfelt thanks to the many who have been engaged in this project over the past 20 years, from local and state partners and consultants, to Purchase College and the Purchase Senior Learning Community Inc. Board members. We look forward to fulfilling the dream of creating a senior learning community on the Purchase College Campus,” said Elizabeth Robertson, Purchase Senior Learning Board President.

“We are so proud to be starting construction of this community where learners of all generations will come together,” said Ashley Wade, Marketing Director at Broadview Senior Living. “Our charter members are such an incredible group of people. Watching them already build community over this past year has been a joy. Broadview is truly the result of so many people coming together to get to today, when Broadview officially begins building.”

“We knew that this community right here in Broadview was going to be something very special for our students, seniors and families,” said Rick Exline, Executive Vice President and Senior Managing Director of Life Plan Communities at Life Care Services (LCS). “Thank you to those who are our charter members for this very unique senior living opportunity and we are so excited to set the course for the future and can’t wait for everyone here to call Broadview home.”

Broadview is currently scheduled to be open to occupants in 2023.
