Vassar-Warner Home to Fully Reopen in Spring 2026

March 25, 2026

Vassar-Warner Home in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., has announced plans to reopen to residents in April 2026 with support from private investments after more than two years of funding challenges.

The nonprofit independent senior living facility, located at 52 S. Hamilton St., said it will resume operations as Dutchess County’s only nonprofit independent senior living residence. Applications are open on the organization’s website.

“The past few years have been a journey, one full of highs and lows, but our determination to restore Vassar-Warner to what it has always been has never wavered,” said Ericka Von Salews, executive director of Vassar-Warner.

The facility, housed in a Greek Revival building that is a designated New York state landmark, has capacity for up to 35 seniors. Services and amenities for residents include prepared meals, laundry, housekeeping, exercise and mobility classes, Mahjong, painting and crafts, educational lectures and book clubs.

“We are beyond grateful for the support from our staff, the community and generous donors, and we look forward to continuing to serve our seniors and provide them a safe and supportive home,” said Richard Schuster, whose mother lived at Vassar-Warner before its closure and who now serves as the nonprofit’s board president.

Vassar-Warner said the reopening also will allow it to continue operating Vassar-Warner Home for the Day, a social model adult day care program established in July 2025 for older adults who attend for a few hours or a full day.

Founded in 1871, Vassar-Warner Home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After a brief closure in 2024, it reopened in summer 2025 as Vassar-Warner Home for the Day. The independent senior living facility’s all-inclusive rate covers three daily meals, laundry, housekeeping, and social, cultural and physical activities.
