Former ABC News Medical Editor Shares Healthy Aging Advice at The Commons in Lincoln
October 7, 2026
LINCOLN, Mass. — Dr. Tim Johnson, a longtime medical editor for ABC News and current resident of The Commons in Lincoln, is sharing his perspective on healthy aging, drawing on decades of medical experience and his own approach to wellness.
Johnson, who appeared regularly on ABC programs including “Good Morning America,” spent much of his career educating viewers about healthcare and medical issues. He continues to contribute his expertise to Boston’s ABC affiliate. He celebrated his 90th birthday in July.
Drawing on his professional experience and personal approach to wellness, Johnson emphasizes the importance of establishing healthy habits early in life and maintaining them as people age.
“The lifestyle choices you make as a senior do matter. But what can make an even bigger impact on your health during senior years are the things you do when you’re in your 50s and 60s,” Johnson said.
His recommendations include avoiding tobacco, maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active and building strong social relationships. Johnson also encourages individuals to understand their family medical histories and work with their healthcare providers on appropriate preventive screenings.
Social connections are particularly important to Johnson, who sees community living as an opportunity to maintain relationships and remain engaged.
“Living in a place like The Commons as a senior is an advantage: We have a strong community and it’s easy to stay in touch with people,” he said.
Johnson also credits his years of running and cycling with contributing to his well-being today. While he advocates healthy eating habits, he takes a flexible approach to nutrition and still enjoys ice cream regularly.
The Commons in Lincoln is a nonprofit continuing care retirement community owned by JustLiving Communities and managed by Benchmark Senior Living. The campus includes 196 independent living apartments and cottages, 40 assisted living units, 24 memory care units and 32 skilled nursing units.
