Edgemere Opens New Communal Space for Memory Care Residents

DALLAS — Edgemere has opened La Piazza, a 3,441-square-foot communal space designed to support individualized programming for memory care residents.

The space is part of The Plaza at Edgemere and is surrounded by activity areas intended to accommodate residents’ abilities, social preferences, moods and cognitive needs. La Piazza also connects memory care residents with assisted living residents who are socially engaged, cognitively active and interested in leadership opportunities.

“For those experiencing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, we know that no two journeys — or even days — are alike,” said Angela Kotschi, memory care program director for Certus Living. “At La Piazza, your loved one will be cherished and respected for who they are. They’ll be nurtured, safe and comfortable while retaining their dignity.”

The surrounding Memory Care Neighborhood includes gathering areas and interactive stations based on residents’ interests, personal histories and daily functioning. Residents may participate in sensory activities, one-on-one or small-group programming and more cognitively challenging social activities.

“It’s not like there’s one set activity, and everybody’s forced to do it or sit alone,” Kotschi said. “Your loved one will be given options based on where they are and with the understanding that that can change day-to-day or even hour-to-hour. Our prime concern is that everyone feels happy, interested and well.”

The Plaza at Edgemere also recently introduced a public Memory Café program for caregivers and families. Dementia support meetings held on the fourth Friday of each month.

Other memory care updates completed since last spring include a remodeled welcoming area, an updated courtyard, dining areas designed to help stimulate appetite and additional staff education focused on dementia care.

The community also added the Atelier Sensory Room, which offers lighting, scents, textures, visuals and music intended to provide calming sensory experiences for residents and visiting family members.

“Families can struggle to find ways to interact with their loved ones in memory care,” Kotschi said. “The Atelier Sensory Room gives them activities they can actually do together.”

Edgemere offers independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing in Dallas’ Preston Hollow neighborhood. Certus Living is a third-party developer and operator of senior living communities.
