May 19, 2022

LOS ANGELES, CA—Living Out Palm Springs appointed industry leader and LGBTQ+ community member Ernie Shaffer as president of the new flagship community in Palm Springs, slated to open in spring 2023. The active adult retirement community is designed to meet the unique needs of LGBTQ+ people, providing a safe and welcoming home for its residents and visitors. Shaffer brings 30+ years of experience in the industry to Living Out; he will be integrally involved in the continuing development of the community, and he will develop, implement and directly oversee all operational components of the community.

Shaffer served as a board member of The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert, then known as the Golden Rainbow Senior Center. In his past employment positions, Shaffer has focused on creating a safe space for all residents; in particular, ensuring the integration of LGBTQ+ seniors into the various types of communities he has operated. His passion for working with the 55+ population and senior retirees, especially members of the LGBTQ+ community, has led him to the Living Out community.

“I have devoted a good part of my professional career in the service of the seniors’ community,” said Shaffer. “The residents who will become part of our family at Living Out Palm Springs are trailblazers for the openness and rights we now enjoy. Our mission is to ensure these remarkable LGBTQ+ seniors feel safe in our retirement community and are accepted for whom they truly are.”

His experience includes leading numerous teams as director of operations overseeing various types of senior communities, including skilled nursing homes, assisted living, memory care and independent retirement living for some of the largest operators in the country; he worked closely with developers, including the Marriott Senior Living retirement communities in southern California during their expansion into continuing care. He most recently served as the senior executive director at Segovia Palm Desert. Shaffer’s collaboration and management experience has allowed him to succeed in the industry and beyond as he continues to promote a culture of understanding and respect for residents by providing staff with extensive specialized training.
