National Church Residences Opens One, Breaks Ground on Another Community Near Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA — National Church Residences, a nonprofit organization providing affordable housing for older adults, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for Crossing Pointe, a new $18.2 million 55+ community in the Atlanta suburb of Union City.

Crossing Pointe will offer 80 one-bedroom apartment homes with a wide range of amenities as well as access to the services offered across the Christian City campus. The development team designed Crossing Pointe with a focus on independence, wellness, and a strong sense of community for residents. This development will expand National Church Residences’ presence on the Christian City campus, increasing the total number of apartments from 291 to 371.

Crossing Pointe will feature a variety of amenities, including a community room; computer room, arts and crafts room, onsite service coordination offering essential services and critical links to community resources; access to amenities on the Christian City campus, including a recreation center, community garden, community shuttle, and many others.

“We are dedicated to building and acquiring affordable housing communities as part of our strategic plan to serve more seniors,” said SVP of Housing and Asset Management Matt Rule in a press release. “Currently, we serve 65,000 seniors, and our Board of Directors has challenged us to develop a vision for advancing better living for 100,000 seniors by 2030.”

The groundbreaking ceremony for Crossing Pointe featured remarks from key contributors, partners, and representatives from National Church Residences.

“This morning, we stood at the threshold of something truly remarkable for our community,” said Union City Mayor Vince Williams. “As Union City continues to thrive as one of Georgia’s fastest-growing cities, we recognize the importance of meeting the needs of all our residents — especially our seniors. Thank you for the spirit of partnership with Christian City and National Church Residences. Today’s groundbreaking ceremony for Crossing Pointe is a clear demonstration of our commitment to provide safe, affordable and accessible housing options for older adults.”

The development of Crossing Pointe is made possible through the support of several financial partners, including the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta, Wells Fargo, and the National Equity Fund. Additionally, other contributions include the design of Crossing Pointe crafted by Atlanta-based Foley Design architecture firm, while McShane Construction is serving as the general contractor.

National Church Residences and Christian City have been partners since 2013, when National Church Residences began employing service coordinators on the campus. In 2021, National Church Residences purchased three affordable-housing communities for seniors from Christian City and added another community the following year.

National Church Residences also recently celebrated the grand opening of Sweetwater Point in Douglasville, which is also in the Atlanta metro area. Sweetwater Point, a 62+ affordable-housing community, officially opened to residents at the end of August. This three-story, 96-residence building, developed by National Church Residences, features 55 one-bedroom apartments and 41 two-bedroom apartments. This independent living community is income-restricted, offering affordable rents with all utilities included.

“This is a significant moment for Douglasville and for affordable housing in Georgia,” said Rule in a separate press release. “Despite facing challenges during construction, including rising costs and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, our team at National Church Residences worked tirelessly to bring this development to completion. We are proud of the work and the opportunities it provides for older adults in this community.”

The ribbon cutting ceremony for the $20 million community featured remarks from community leaders, financial and development partners, and leaders from National Church Residences.

Sweetwater Point is the first new U.S. Housing and Urban Development Section 202 Project Rental Assistance Contract affordable senior housing development in Georgia in more than 10 years. It was one of just 18 projects to receive this award from HUD in February 2020.

NCR’s first community in Douglas County offers a range of modern amenities including a fitness center, arts and crafts room, and social gathering areas. Sweetwater Point also offers organized social activities.

Funding partners on Sweetwater Point include Wells Fargo, Enterprise Community Partners, Bellwether Enterprise Real Estate Capital, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Sugar Creek Capital, The Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Mercy Community Capital, and the Douglas County Housing Authority. The design of Sweetwater Point was developed by the Atlanta-based Foley Design architecture firm. Varium Construction of Atlanta served as the general contractor.

In the last four years, National Church Residences has invested $140 million in the Atlanta area. Another $75 million in development projects have begun in south Fulton County since this summer. The organization has owned and operated senior housing communities in the Atlanta metro area for more than 20 years. Currently, National Church Residences has 16 communities with more than 2,000 apartment homes across the metro area.

Originating from a Christian commitment of service, National Church Residences provides an array of health care services and a variety of housing options to 65,000 older adults at more than 350 communities. The nonprofit organization is driven by a vision to scale for mission impact by advancing better living for 100,000 seniors by 2030, wherever they call home. The organization also offers a variety of additional senior living options, home- and community-based services, as well as permanent supportive housing for the formerly homeless and disabled.
