National Church Residences to Expand with New Affordable Senior Housing Community

April 17, 2024

COLUMBUS, OH — The Scarborough, a new 84-unit affordable senior housing community by National Church Residences, has received a $9 million U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Section 202 award and it is now slated to break ground in the summer of 2025. National Church Residences will lease the land for The Scarborough from Trinity Baptist Church, a congregation with nearly 100 years of history in the community and directly across the street from the development site.

“National Church Residences is honored to bring additional safe, affordable senior housing to the historic and thriving Near East Side,” said Vice President of Affordable Housing at National Church Residences, Amy Rosenthal. “According to HUD research, there are 50 or fewer affordable housing units available per 100 very low-income households at this location — and 25 percent of households suffer from severe housing problems. The Scarborough will address these challenges and advance our mission to provide area seniors with high-quality affordable housing so that they can remain in the community where they have lived, worked, and raised families.”

Located on the Near East Side of Ohio’s capital, The Scarborough will be an income-restricted community for seniors aged 62 and older. The mid-rise, four-story building will consist of 76 one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom apartment homes. Amenities will include a large community room with a kitchen, an extensive fitness center, and an outdoor gathering space.

In addition to the HUD award, The Scarborough will combine non-competitive four percent Housing Tax Credits from the Ohio Housing Finance Agency and funds from the City of Columbus. Nix Development Company, LLC, a minority-owned real estate development and advisory firm focused on improving the quality of life and strengthening the economic stability of residents and distressed neighborhoods through responsible revitalization, is also partnering with National Church Residences and Trinity Baptist Church to make the vision for The Scarborough a reality.
