Tuckahoe Retirement Community Explores Music and Movement From Different Cultures

March 16, 2023

TUCKAHOE, NY—Lively rhythms recently filled the halls of The Fountains at RiverVue, a Watermark Retirement Community based in Tuckahoe, when a group of dancers from the Revelators, Inc. stopped by for a special performance. The interactive event got residents on their feet to participate and celebrate music and forms of expression from different cultures.

Community life director Reghan Giannelli invited the performers to engage residents in a celebration of Black history last month. The Revelators, Inc., which is based out of the Boys and Girls Club of Mt. Vernon, NY, originally formed as a spiritually-based dance troupe, but has evolved to include various forms of dance such as African, tap and those specific to different geographic regions and cultures. Founded by Marion Archer in the mid-1970s to provide a safe, healthy activity for youth, the troupe continues to grow and thrive today.

“Their bodies must be made of Jell-O,” exclaimed Marion Keegan, a resident of The Fountains at RiverVue.

The community’s resident relations director, Arielle Miras, said she was moved to tears.

“There was great beauty in the movement, but also the outcome of this event,” agreed Giannelli. “Many of the residents opened themselves up to something new and appreciated and enjoyed every second of it.”
