Western Reserve Masonic Community Announces Construction Plans for Senior Living Neighborhood

MEDINA, OHIO–Western Reserve Masonic Community (WRMC), an active lifestyle community for those 55 and better operated by Springfield-based The Ohio Masonic Home, is planning for the construction of a new independent living neighborhood, according to Tom Maloney, COO and CFO of The Ohio Masonic Home. The Palmary at Western Reserve Masonic Community is a new addition to WRMC’s existing 229-acre campus located at 4931 Nettleton Road in Medina.
The Palmary at Western Reserve Masonic Community will be a three-story, 273,000 square-foot expansion that includes 99 independent living apartment homes and a new commons area where community members can access multiple dining venues, a fitness and wellness facility, a multipurpose room for gatherings and activities, and a beauty salon/barbershop. Connection corridors to the existing campus buildings give community members access to all of the programs, services and amenities available at WRMC.
Maloney said the addition at WRMC is a natural progression for The Ohio Masonic Home, which recently invested $1.75 million into renovating apartment homes and the dining facility at WRMC’s sister community, Springfield Masonic Community.
“We are a trusted partner and resource for Ohio seniors because we stay true to our mission,” Maloney said. “We listen to and anticipate the needs and expectations of the burgeoning number of older adults in Medina and the surrounding communities. And theirs are much different than the generations before them.”
Medina County’s population grew by 15.8 percent between 2000 and 2013, according to a study by the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging, and 70 percent of those residents were considered older adults. In addition, the
Scripps Gerontology Center predicts that over 25 percent (48,000) Medina County residents will be 60 or older by 2020 and 31 percent (60,000) will be over 60 by 2030.
Maloney described how families’ retirement stories are evolving. “People are not retiring into a passive lifestyle; rather, they are jumping into this new chapter with vigor because they have the freedom, the time, the health and energy to do and try whatever moves them. For this demographic, The Palmary at Western Reserve Masonic Community will feel very much like home.”
In addition to the construction of The Palmary, Western Reserve Masonic Community is renovating 55,000 square-feet of common areas located in the existing independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing neighborhoods. Assisted living community members will enjoy a new living room and dedicated dining area and café. A new physical therapy and occupational therapy facility will offer community members with convenient, quality rehabilitation services. In skilled nursing, a new single-story atrium will serve as the common area.
Construction of The Palmary is expected to begin mid-2020. Construction project partners include The Ohio Masonic Home, RDL Architects, RDL Interiors, McHenry & Associates, Mistick Construction, GPD Group, and POD Design. Greystone Communities is serving as the development consultant.
