101-Year-Old Woodland Terrace Resident Makes Full Recovery from the Coronavirus
April 16, 2020
CARY, NC–Woodland Terrace, a Kisco Senior Living community, is pleased to announce the complete recovery of a 101-year-old assisted living resident who tested positive for the Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, was diagnosed on March 16 after exhibiting symptoms of the virus. She received treatment at a local hospital and then was quarantined at the senior living community while she recovered.
The associates who were in contact with the resident remained symptom-free during their 14-day quarantine and have since returned to work. There are no additional cases reported at the community, and the origin of the virus remains unknown.
Executive Director Matt Towler says stopping the spread of the virus is a collaborative effort, and credits teamwork from residents and associates alike.
“The health and well-being of residents and associates is and will always be our top priority at Woodland Terrace, and we are grateful our resident has made a full recovery from the virus,” said Towler. “From the moment we received the positive test result, our team sprang into action, and I can’t thank them enough for their hard work. We were transparent with residents, their families and associates from the beginning, and I believe that helped stop the spread of the virus.
“We enhanced protocols already in place to provide the safest environment for our residents and associates. We worked with local and state health authorities, as well as followed guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We restricted visitors, asked residents to self-isolate and increased disinfecting of high-touched and high-trafficked areas. We continue to monitor the virus and are continually updating residents and their families. We are a strong community who will get through this unprecedented time,” Towler emphasized.
Woodland Terrace has additional measures in place to ensure residents and associates remain safe and healthy. Some of those include increasing sanitation throughout the community, daily monitoring of all residents and associates for fever and cough, asking residents who must leave their apartment to wear a mask and practice social distancing, requiring all associates to wear masks and suspending dining hours and delivering meals to residents in their apartments.
The community is keeping residents engaged with one-on-one exercises in their apartments and encouraging virtual visits through Facetime and Skype with family members. Associates also have been provided access to extended sick leave balances so that they can recover at home should they become ill.
“Woodland Terrace’s handling of COVID-19 is setting the standard for senior living communities during this time,” said Brian Grandbouche, senior vice president of operations, Kisco Senior Living. “We are proud of the work they continue to do each day and are so thankful their resident has made a full recovery, and no additional cases have been detected. We value each resident and associate and want them to know we are here for them and the protocols in place are for their health and well-being. We will continue to provide support to each of our communities as we weather the ever-changing storm brought on by Coronavirus.”
Across all 20 communities in the Kisco Senior Living portfolio, associates have created unique and innovative ways to keep the residents engaged and connected—from birthday party parades to concert pianists performing in the courtyard to an influx of letters and artwork for residents from total strangers. According to Grandbouche, despite this unprecedented pandemic, Kisco is remaining true to its mantra of Making A Difference Every Day® in the lives of its residents and associates.
