The Jewish Home Names Dr. Joshua Shua-Haim as Program Director for New Memory Care Unit

FREEHOLD, NJ–The Jewish Home for Rehabilitation & Nursing has named Dr. Joshua Shua-Haim, FACP, AGSF, CMD, as program director for its new memory care unit. The 150-bed skilled nursing facility, which opened in 2018, provides post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care.

The Jewish Home features a cultural setting, including a synagogue on premises and special Jewish programming. The skilled nursing facility also offers OU certified Glatt Kosher cuisine.

Under Dr. Shua-Haim’s direction, The Jewish Home’s new memory care unit provides 24-hour skilled nursing services, comprehensive innovative treatments and structured daily activities designed to meet the needs of those with memory impairment. The memory care setting creates a neighborhood that is home to both residents and their family members, who are always welcome to visit, and has its own dining room and well-appointed courtyard garden.

Board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine, Dr. Shua-Haim also serves as medical director at Willow Springs Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Brick, which also is a Marquis Health Services member facility. He is a professor of medicine at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and is affiliated with RWJBarnabas Health Community Medical Centers in Toms River and Manchester, NJ. In addition, Dr. Shua-Haim is the medical chief and president of Mid Atlantic Geriatric Associates – Ocean, P.A. in Manchester, NJ. His academic positions include Fellow of the American College of Physicians and Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society. In addition, he serves as Director – Fourth Year Geriatric Medicine Elective for RWJ-MS.

Located at 1151 West Main Street, The Jewish Home is a modern, three-story facility featuring luxury-hotel style décor and a state-of-the-art rehab gym with a smart car. The skilled nursing facility has private rooms, including bathrooms with showers, for subacute patients, and its long-term residential care wing includes semi-private rooms with layouts designed for enhanced privacy.

The Jewish Home hosts free caregiver support group and education meetings each month. Open to the public, the meetings provide strategies for caregivers to better care for themselves while caring for their loved ones, especially those with memory disorders.

“Individuals with memory care disorders are prone to reflecting back on traumatic experiences,” noted Montemurno. “The Jewish Home’s caregiver support groups have a specific sensitivity to caring for loved ones who may be dealing with haunting memories of the Holocaust.”

Led by Mira Ahuja, the meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month from noon to 2 p.m., with a light lunch provided. Participants also have the opportunity to engage in a general discussion, getting tips and peer-to-peer support.
