CARY, NCAware Senior Care announced today that its Director and Co-Founder, Gina Murray, RN, BSN, received the Sherry Leigh Thomas Nurse of the Year Award from the Association for Home and Hospice Care of North Carolina (AHHC of NC).

“Sherry’s spirit lives on through all of us who continue to benefit from her dedication, her passion and her compassion,” said Gina Murray, Aware Senior Care’s Director and Co-Founder. “I am humbled to receive this award. Listening to people talk about how Sherry influenced their lives inspires me to continue to pay it forward in my own life.”

According to the AHHC of NC, the Sherry Leigh Thomas Nurse of the Year Award seeks to honor someone who “has dedicated their career and professional contributions to the field of home health or hospice care and has the heart of a teacher.” The winner must also demonstrate a “commitment, passion and selflessness to delivering quality care, professionalism and patient outcomes.” Sherry Leigh Thomas was the former Senior Executive Vice President of AHHC. She was instrumental in the growth and development of the home care and hospice industry in North Carolina.

This year, the AHHC of NC’s annual conference and awards ceremony focused on how home health, home care, palliative care and hospice services can assist patients and families to remain at home with excellent clinical care and outcomes. The event drew hundreds of health care professionals from around North Carolina.

“The awards ceremony recognized the excellence of individuals who are dedicated to promoting healing, extending life, and alleviating pain and suffering, all the while keeping families together and providing the greatest degree of freedom, independence, and dignity possible,” said the AHHC of NC in a statement. “These are the true heroes in home care, home health and hospice, who serve on the front line every day, countering numerous challenges often with a smile on their face and a fierce determination to persevere on behalf of their patients.”

There are over 800 AHHC of NC member agencies throughout the state, with more than 100,000 employees working in home care, home health and hospice care. Gina Murray is the first recipient of this award.
