Collingswood Introduces Palliative Care Services with Pastoral Support

November 10, 2021

The addition of Palliative Care with pastoral support at Collingswood Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center caps the development of a new, comprehensive Chronic Illness Support care model at the Rockville skilled nursing facility. Located at 299 Hurley Avenue, Collingswood offers post-hospital care, short-term rehab and long-term residential care.

Palliative care is a specialized medical model for people living with a serious, chronic or life-limiting illness. It focuses on providing the necessary medical, emotional and spiritual support to help relieve symptoms and stress, with the goal of improving quality of life for patients and their loved ones. Palliative care often accompanies curative treatment and is administered by a trained team of doctors, nurses and specialists. The service dovetails with Collingswood’s wide range of traditional skilled nursing and specialty care programming, including Cardiac Care, Pulmonary Rehab, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Management with onsite hemodialysis, and a dedicated Dementia Care unit.

With the support of Marquis Health Consulting Services, Collingswood has been working toward this enhanced care offering. “The facility’s suite of specialty care, with the overlay of palliative care and pastoral support, represents a progressive skilled nursing model,” said Marquis’ Nikki Gachot, regional director of market development. “With a deep focus on both physical and mental wellness, it truly is an innovative approach.”

Paul Newman, MD, MBA, MS, has been appointed to direct the new palliative care initiative at Collingswood, while Reverend Eleanor Piez is providing spiritual support for the residents it serves. Dr. Newman is board certified in family medicine and hospice-palliative care medicine; he is affiliated with University of Maryland Capital Region Health. Rev. Piez, an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister, is a chaplain with Adventist Healthcare Shady Grove Medical Center.

“The incorporation of such high-caliber leadership is a testament to Collingswood’s strong relationships with both the University of Maryland and Adventist Healthcare – two of the region’s most respected healthcare systems,” Gachot noted.

Beyond its clinical offerings, Collingswood provides a resource library of physician-curated content, addressing many topics of interest for families of patients and the larger community. The library and more information on the skilled nursing facility can be found at collingswoodrehab.com.
