Argentum Highlights Priorities in Older Americans Act Reauthorization

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate has passed legislation reauthorizing the Older Americans Act through fiscal 2030, including provisions to address social isolation, multigenerational engagement and aging policy priorities that are supported by Argentum, a national association representing professionally managed senior living communities.
The measure must still be approved by the House of Representatives and signed by the president before becoming law. With the August recess only days away, the bill will most likely be considered when the House reconvenes in September.
The legislation would establish a new White House Conference on Aging to evaluate national aging policy and develop recommendations for Congress and the administration. It also would promote civic and multigenerational engagement programs and support initiatives intended to reduce loneliness and social isolation among older adults.
“Senate passage of the Older Americans Act reauthorization is a significant step forward for older adults and the providers who support them every day,” said James Balda, Argentum president and CEO. “Argentum has spent more than two years advocating for policies that address social isolation, improve quality of life and prepare our nation for the realities of a rapidly growing older population. We are pleased to see several of those priorities included in the legislation.”
The provisions cited by Argentum include:
- White House Conference on Aging (Section 113): Establishes a national forum to assess aging policy priorities and make recommendations to federal policymakers.
- Multigenerational and civic engagement (Section 207): Promotes programs that encourage interaction and participation across generations.
- Socialization and social isolation (Section 209): Supports efforts to improve social connectedness and address loneliness among older adults.
Argentum said it has supported the reauthorization effort through congressional outreach, coalition-building and advocacy focused on social engagement, intergenerational programming and healthy aging. During its Public Policy Fly-In, the association met with lawmakers to discuss a renewed White House Conference on Aging and other priorities included in the Senate-passed legislation. Argentum said it will continue working with lawmakers, including members of the House 21st Century Long-Term Care Caucus, which the association helped establish, to advance those priorities.
