Mount Prospect Senior Living Gains Certification to Offer Globally Recognized Parkinson’s Therapy Program

March 7, 2022

Mount Prospect Senior Living is now certified to offer a globally recognized Parkinson’s therapy program to help those with the disease. LSVT Global pioneered two programs, LSVT LOUD and LSVT BIG, which are innovative and clinically proven methods for improving communication and movement in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The decision to incorporate progressive therapies into an already robust and resident-focused wellness program is the result of an ongoing commitment to ensure the needs of all residents are met.

Two-thirds of the residents at Mount Prospect currently live with PD and are improving their symptoms everyday through the LSVT-certified therapy program. These programs are designed to improve bodily function and slow motor deterioration through intensive exercise and patient empowerment, while also increasing speech clarity and improving confidence. Offered by a speech therapist, LSVT LOUD helps participants increase tone of voice and improve intelligibility while focusing on precise, clear speech sounds. LSVT BIG therapy trains people with PD to use their body more normally. The therapy targets limb motor systems to increase speed of motion and sensory perception. Because LSVT BIG treatment is personalized to each person’s specific needs and goals, it can help regardless of the stage or severity of your condition.

The LSVT therapy programs at the community are supported by a transdisciplinary team of clinicians that include a speech therapist, an occupational therapist and a neuropsychologist. Together, the team incorporates residents’ needs and goals into a comprehensive wellness plan.

“Our goal is to be highly responsive to the needs of our residents and to proactively assist those with Parkinson’s to live a better life,” said Christine Lawrence, executive director of Mount Prospect Senior Living. “By offering LSVT therapies, it strengthens our connection to our residents and gives us an opportunity to have a dedicated team to increase our standards of care.”
