Careers With Purpose: Perspective from Young Professionals

There is often a great deal of pressure as a college graduate to find a career that offers growth, stability and purpose. What we both didn’t expect was to find all of that — and more — so early in our careers, and in an industry that deserves far more attention from young professionals.

For those interested in health care or hospitality, the senior living industry offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact while building a dynamic and rewarding career. Although it may not always be the first field that graduates consider, we hope as young professionals to inspire others to discover the breadth of opportunities that are available and the strong sense of purpose behind the work.

Our experience in senior living has completely reshaped how we think about meaningful work and the difference that young people can make immediately after entering the workforce. The industry combines innovation, relationship-building, service and leadership in ways that few others can, while also allowing professionals to contribute directly to the well-being and quality of life of older adults. Rather than simply being a career path, the senior living industry has become a place where we can grow professionally, build connections across generations and see the tangible difference our work makes every day.

The senior living industry is one of the most rewarding and people-centered fields to enter at any stage of a career. For those of us from the “Gen Z” generation, our work must have meaning from the very start. We could not have imagined just how much our first jobs would mean to us. We’re not just clocking in and out each day; we are building lifelong relationships and using our skills and interests to make a direct impact on people’s daily lives. It’s a space where compassionate, like-minded individuals come together with a shared goal.

Regardless of your role or position, the residents of these communities want to know you and value your contributions. While some of us have roles that allow us to work directly with the residents in programming or health care capacities, and others work more behind the scenes, we are all members of one community. Every morning when we walk down the halls of New Pond Village, we stop to catch up with residents and are just as excited to see their faces as they are to see ours. We often tell people that the best thing we have gained from working in this field is a hundred new grandparents.

Leaders in these communities are often different than those in other fields. Success in the senior living industry requires strong interpersonal skills, a great sense of pride in helping others and a true commitment to connection. Growing alongside leaders who truly care about the work that they and their staff do creates an invaluable sense of community and teamwork. The industry also offers real opportunities for personal and professional growth, whether we are exploring clinical pathways, leadership roles or specialized care. Additionally, senior living supports work-life balance in meaningful ways, with structured shifts, team-based environments and a culture that recognizes the importance of well-being for both residents and associates.

For those of us who are seeking purpose, connection, development and balance, senior living isn’t just a job; it’s a career path that meets us where we are and helps us grow into who we want to become. At the same time, communities like ours can benefit from welcoming recent graduates who bring enthusiasm, creativity and a genuine desire to contribute.

At the end of the day, fulfillment comes from knowing that what you do matters. For us, that’s what makes this work so special and why we hope more people our age discover it, too.
